Domestic/Global State of Affairs in 5G: Towards the 6G Development Cycle by Prof. Kiran Kuchi

Hello everyone,
SVUCE Alumni Association warmly welcomes all students, alumni, faculty, for the webinar on "Domestic/Global State of Affairs in 5G: Towards the 6G Development Cycle" by Prof. Kiran Kuchi, Professor, IIT Hyderabad.

About the Lecture

Domestic/Global State of Affairs in 5G: Towards the 6G Development Cycle
The completion of 3GPP rel-15 5G NR (New Radio) was announced in mid-2018. By now, 5G has undergone two releases of development (Rel-15 and 16) with a third releases (rel-17) coming up soon. It’s a good time to take stock of 5G developments and the its evolution towards 6G.
In this talk, we will first go over the global trends in the 5G roll outs (sub 6Hz and mmwave deployments), we will discuss where massive machine type communication (NB-IoT/CAT-M1) is headed, and also examine the potential for Ultra-Reliable-Low-Latency-Communication (URLLC) technology. We will review the contributions made from India that made their maiden entry into 5G standards. Indigenous 5G development has been gaining significant traction and we will discuss the opportunities for Indian entities in developing 5G products and solutions.
Global standards evolve every decade whereas the communication services evolve about every 20 years. 5G applications such as IoT and URLLC which are in its early deployment phase will mature only in the 6G timeframe (i.e., 2030 and beyond) where much higher requirements will be placed on: end-to-end latency (sub millisecond), data rates (on the order of 100 Gbps), and achieving universal coverage (using a combination of cellular, Satellites, Aeroplanes and drones). Applications like big data, AI/ML, machine-machine communication, and human-machine interaction will begin with 5G but will reach the true potential in the next two decades through 5G evolution and 6G technology. The speaker will review the existing global 6G R&D activities and present his views on how India could become a fore multiplier in the development of 5G evolution and 6G technology.

Speaker Profile

Prof. KIRAN KUCHI
Prof. Kiran Kuchi, a professor at IIT Hyderabad, is a globally recognized innovator in the realm of 5G standards development. He has introduced the culture of developing wireless standards related patents in India through his leadership role at Telecom Standards Development Society, India (TSDSI) and has contributed towards the creation of several important technologies in the 5G standards. Prof. Kuchi has invented & co-invented over 100 patents in the 4G/5G technology, of which more than 50 patents have resulted from his work carried out in India. Prof. Kuchi founded WiSig Networks (WiSig), a deep tech 5G start-up that is engaged in the development 5G products and solutions./p>
